About
This 3 day workshop will be led by Curtis Herrmann, Samuel Herrmann and John Perilloux . You will be provided with all of the parts and materials needed to build your own 70 pound tire hammer. The hammers will have machined steel 70 pound rams and some sub assemblies such as machined solid top linkage and one piece machined top hats. This will speed up the build as well as making a more precise machine. Each participant will go home with a finished power hammer.
We will also provide a filling lunch each day free of charge as well as soft drinks, water and coffee throughout each day. Several restaurants/fast food locations are available if preferred within 3-4 miles.
Skill level: Beginner to Advance. There is no particular skill level required. There is a job for everyone.
About this hammer:
"Ray Clontz invented the concept of using a flat pulley driving a small diameter tire to power a blacksmith power hammer. He never built one but several other North Carolina blacksmiths built the hammers using Ray’s concept with a spring cushioned mechanism similar to Little Giant.
As the motor is pivoted by the treadle, the flat pulley on the motor rubs against the rubber tire and drives the hammer. The low friction roller bearings of the axle and the slick UHMW plastic guide bearings guiding the hammer head allow this hammer to have exceptional control. A brake stops the hammer very quickly."
Clay Spencer developed and currently sells the plans for these hammers and it is one of the most popular power hammers in the United States because of its affordability, compact size and its ability to be used with 120v single phase power.
